Reflection report

LCS2013 Reflection

There are many ways to teach and study .On my course LSC2013 I have learnt a lot of things connecting reading and writing. I have specifically improved my skills in reading and writing and got used to summarizing articles and writing mini reports. Also, it was helped me increase my speaking level. My teacher has taught me the steps in producing a professional summary or essay.  Outlines are one of the most important steps to make your ideas clear and organize your writing.  Also, I had to search for and collect information from different sites another thing has my teacher taught me is how to add citations in the bibliography in APA format. In addition, this course has encouraged me to discover my weakness in reading and writing and taught me how I can improve my skills in these areas. Furthermore in this course I have learnt how I can be responsible and manage my time to stick to deadlines and submit the work on time. In this course we use different technologies to make our learning easy and enjoyable. For example we use data base references and a blogger so it’s easy for everyone to read and find your writing. My teacher was friendly and helped as to get a good grade by giving us feedback on each part of our writing. I had difficulty in managing between this course and other courses in the beginning, but after a while I became familiar with it. In conclusion, thanks to my teacher for everything you did  to help us improve our skills and get a great mark.

Fossil fuels

Fossil fuels

Fossil fuels can be described as oil, gas and coal are also classified as fossil fuels since they are formed from organic means of ancient animals and plants. It can be seen coal is crushed into burnt and fine dust. According to the article title: “Energy resources: fossil fuels” (n.d) “it should be observed. There are specific power stations that are constructed on the coast. In addition to this, coal tends to provide 28% of its energy and oil offers 40%; when coal is burnt it tends to produce sulphur dioxide; an acidic gas that contributes to the formation of acid rain. In order to avoid this from happening, the flu gas desulphurization process can be used for cleaning up the gases prior to their actual release into the environment” (Energy resources: fossil fuels, n.d)

In terms of the possible problems within fossil fuels, it can be seen refers to pollution and increasing demand. Within pollution,  the article titled “Problems with fossil fuels” explains “fossil fuels tend to release dangerous chemicals (combustion) which contributed to unknown amounts of people who are diagnosed with illnesses ranging from cancer, respiratory disease to heart disease and other illnesses amongst youngsters and the elderly who are likely to be far more vulnerable (Problems with fossil fuels, n.d).

A second problem refers to the increasing request; within this context it can be observed; as countries keep developing, the possibility of them expecting more fossil fuels would mean an increase in the quantity of fossil fuels is necessary. There is a great competition too, That makes the prices rise since fossil fuel sources are limitedly available. According to the article “The Problem with Fossil Fuels” it describes how countries such as China and India were faced with an increasing demand: “As countries with large populations like China and India became more and more development, they are going to use an increasing amount of fossil fuels.” (The Problem with Fossil Fuels, n.d)

In terms of the solutions to these two problems, it can be seen, according to the article titled: “The Sources and Solutions: Fossil Fuels” in order to tackle pollution, “it is essential to manage and work towards decreasing emissions; by working on yearly greenhouse gas inventories and that would be considered in their long term targets to decrease emissions. Secondly, they need to purchase renewable energy that would help in decreasing the level of pollution and offer numerous valuable advantages” (The sources and solutions: fossil fuels, n.d)

In terms of the chosen case study of the country for fossil fuels, I has h chosen Spain;  according to the article titled “Fossil fuel energy consumption in Spain” it explains Spain’s consumption “its consumption of fuel energy was reported at 76.38 during 2010” (Fossil fuel energy consumption in Spain, n.d). According to the figures released in 2008 on fossil fuel carbon dioxide emission estimates; it indicates Spain was ranked at the 19th position of the national emitter of carbon dioxide with 90 million metric tons of carbon (Spain Fossil Fuel Co2 Emissions, n.d)

The fact Spain is considered as the world’s biggest energy consumer within Europe and it has no production of natural gas and liquid fuels clearly shows Spain is faced with heavy dependency on fossil fuels. It can further be expanded; liquid fuels are considered as one of the biggest and primary source of Spain’s overall energy consumption; primarily within the transportation sector.

Loomans (2013) explains “Spain is a very open to the idea of adapting to renewable energy; this is clearly apparent from Spain’s consumption of renewable energy is stable; it has been using hydropower, along with solar photovoltaic” Furthermore, Spain is currently targeting and considering wind power to provide 40% of the electricity consumption by the year 2020; where Spain is hopeful about growing its solar energy.

Within the context of Spain’s future use of renewable energy, it can be observed, Spain is hopeful about its future which seems positive towards expanding renewable energy projects within the country, Bechberger (2013) explains “Spain has been witnessed its electricity sector face a change; especially with the notable changes it has made in its electricity industry that previously experienced hiking prices. By focusing more on renewable projects that are designed on decreasing electricity prices, it would help the country deal with such an issue.”

We saw within the context of this essay the role of fossil fuels is important to producing energy and it serves a lot of purposes to keep our environment and infrastructure active, While there are several advantages, there are too many drawbacks too; these are mainly pollution and the on-going increasing demand that is a challenge for countries since they need to search for solutions that would help balance and protect the environment from being harmed by pollution. In order to attack the disadvantages, governments need to familiarize to the nature that would consist of renewable energy that has long term benefits and helps in decreasing costs.

Great wall of China

One of the biggest engineering projects is the Great Wall of China. I will discuss and explain the reasons and who is built it and how much time does it take and the history of the Great Wall of China. “A popular legend about the Great Wall is the story of Meng Jiang Nu, a wife of a farmer who was forced to work on the wall during the Qin Dynasty. When she heard her husband had died while working the wall, she wept until the wall collapsed, revealing his bones so she could bury them” (39 Interesting Facts about the Great Wall of China. 2009) .The purpose why they built and thousands of Chinese people died while it was built, was to connect the parts of the country in to one China and it was defensive structure. There are many answers who built it, some says Emperor Qin Shihuang build it, but some say ordinary working people of ancient China and the wall built up by tree groups of people. It was built by stone, brick, and other materials. The Great Wall of China generally built along an east from Shanhaiguan-to-lope lake west line across the historical northern borders of China, And it is take to build from 221BCE to 206BCE. And in the present there are keeping rebuilt from 20th century.

It takes many centuries to build up around 221BCE to 206BCE, and many Chinese people died while they are build it, and in 20th century they start to rebuild and maintained to keep it in good condition.  There wasn’t monetary coast to build it up, but it cost the lives of Chinese people. Thousands of Chinese people died while they built it. It takes many centuries the first part was completed 200BCE, and the last part were added over 200 years during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). There was not clear information about the time taken to build and the cost of Great Wall of China but a lot of Chinese people died and that was the final human cost.

It took the Great Wall of China nearly 2,000 years since it underwent modification, unification ad re-construction. In essence, even though it wasn’t built on time during the 7th century BC; it initially started building the Wall when China was segmented into numerous tiny states. Due to the inconsistencies during the construction period of the Wall, it was unable to meet its deadline. The fact Mongols invaded China; this caused disruption in the construction work of the Wall. It was only when Ming defeated the Mongols when the Wall could resume to its construction work. It should be noted the first section of the Wall took about 10 years to construct; it was constructed at the rate of nearly 1 mile per day.

What makes the Great Wall of China so significant historically speaking is its gigantic size and the very fact it can be seen from earth’s orbit. Going back to its origins, it can be seen the purpose of the Wall was to sustain boundaries between kingdoms and safeguard from enemies. Secondly, during Qin’s dynasty, Qin wanted to safeguard his kingdom, he decided to repair and consolidate new walls known as the Western wall that ranges between Yongdeng to Jinquan. This is followed by other dynasties who used the Wall protection purpose and, this consists of the Han dynasty, Northern dynasties, Sui dynasties and Ming dynasty (the final one).

At present the Great of Wall of China has been used for tourism purpose; it is perceived as one of the most developed tourist spots which are preserved in an excellent manner. All profits made from admission tickets help contribute towards its conservation and maintenance and improve management.

In terms of its influence on the world, it is seen as an impressive and remarkable piece of architecture in history. It was labeled by the UNESCO as a World Heritage site. It is known as the only man-made structure can that be seen from the moon.

In essence, we saw how the Great Wall of China holds great historical significance and its construction has an interesting story where it was constructed over a period of time and it underwent various transformations, re-constructions, modifications and was unified with various kingdoms as dynasties kept ruling China.

Emirati jobseekers

Emirati jobseekers

Skills and chances to grow is the most important to get a job in private and government sectors.INJAZ UAE implies that private sector can’t hire the Emirati, because they request high salary with flexible hours work. In live voting there are different reasons that help you to get a job. Another voting showed working in private sector better than government, because the can get more skills and better offers. Emirati have no enough information about development chances in private Companies. By mistake private sector though that the salary is the most important factor for Emirati. We have to do trainee programs for the youth and awareness them about private sector.

Fertile past unearthed from sands of Arabia

Fertile past unearthed from sands of Arabia

The life of people in Arabic Peninsula who travelled out to Africa to populate the rest of the world. Professor Michael Petraglia said that “The Arabian Peninsula is the stepping stone out of Africa”(p1). A huge amount of funding is provided from the European Research Council to locate and excavate all over the peninsula and they have joined with specialists in Oman and the UAE. Another theory said that people came from Africa into Saudi Arabian and from Sinai to the Levant. The first step is to identify historic and prehistoric water sources, while the other step is walk alongside the lakes, using photographs because the terrain is inaccessible. This nomadic, hunter-gatherer lifestyle meant they had to keep moving from area to another to survive. Climate change impacted their life and this is just as important today.

Mars the key to our origins?

Mohamed Abdullatif                                 Mars the key to our origins?                                              H00210971

In August 2012 Nasa began search of evidence that Mars had life. The rover named curiosity went through alien atmosphere after traveling more than half billion kilometers. Last seven missions in Mars NASA engineers succeeded. The Viking mission was in mid-1970s and some of result gave positive while other gave negative by testing the soil in Mars, but they don’t found a sign of human life there.

In 2008 there rover found a salts that destroyed organic life.in 1990s, scientists discover bacteria living in darkness place on the surface. They also discovered ‘’infections proteins’’ that copies them self. Scientists have found one hundred meteorites from Mars. As for microbes remaining a life then bugs will be able to live under heat, cold and radiations situations . Scientists  observed from falling meteorites from Mars that the inner particles consist of gas that is identical to the atmosphere of Mars and they could use it as a proof of life on Mars.
